Kathleen Battle’s “Underground Railroad: A Spiritual Journey” at the Soraya

A singing legend comes to the Valley!

Kathleen Battle is an American operatic soprano known for her distinctive vocal range and tone. Tackling lyric soprano and coloratura soprano roles with aplomb, Battle initially became known for her work within the concert repertoire through performances with major orchestras during the early and mid-1970s. She made her opera debut in 1975.

The prima donna made a triumphant return to the Metropolitan Opera last year, capped by five encores.

Kathleen Battle’s Underground Railroad: A Spiritual Journey chronicles the courageous quest for freedom by America’s slaves. Battle draws from her own musical roots with this collection of spirituals, performed with the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers.

Following her sold out appearance at the Met, Battle reprises the program in Los Angeles, choosing The Soyara at VPAC (Valley Performing Arts Center) for its renowned acoustics.
