Raucous fun and witty wordplay — only two performances remain for one of the best nights of live performance in town. Thursday and Friday nights *this week only* you can catch the Melrose Poetry Bureau doing their thing at the Bootleg Theatre on Beverly, presenting their Quickdraw Poetry Cabaret.

Written and devised by the quintet of poets — Nayeli Adorador-Knudsen, Bobby Gordon, Ary Katz, Linda Ravenswood and Brian Sonia-Wallace — the show’s concept is unique.

Throughout the eventing the poets are pitted against each other in fast-paced duels. Prompted by cues and themes obtained from the audience, the poets have to compose their works on the spot and under the gun. It’s a trip to watch them feverishly tap out their poems on old-school manual typewriters (complete with the ‘ding’ sound at the end of each line before the carriage return).

A highlight is a death-defying race by four of the poets to incorporate ten random words yelled out by the audience a specific intervals into a single poem. MC for that segment, Ary Katz then blew us all away by improvising and rapping a poem on the spot.

Sultry burlesque dancer Erin Bridges serves as the poets’ muse with her sexy gyrations. She even performs a tantalizing strip of one of the typewriters draped with lingerie, peeling off each layer with her teeth. Don’t worry, there’s some beefcake to go with the cheesecake too.

Don’t miss this dazzling show!

Melrose Poetry Bureau is represented by Knudsen Productions and is a company-in-residence with Write Club Los Angeles at the Bootleg Theater.

Melrose Poetry Bureau [MPB] creates live poetry installations on manual typewriters and offers a wealth of performance and educational opportunities including (but not limited to) spoken word performances, writing workshop residencies, and coordination of poetry slams.

MPB is the brainchild of poet/writers Nayeli Knudsen and Bobby Gordon. In 2014, Brian Sonia-Wallace, an LA native and writer extraordinaire, joined the team as a managing partner to make up what is now the core of MPB.

MPB was developed with the intention of bringing poets and the public back together. Inspired by participating in typewriter installations at UCLA, and the previous work of their mentors such as Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Paul Flores, and James Kass of Youth Speaks Inc ., MPB provides entertainment and facilitates a critical dialogue with their surrounding community as well.

Our signature installation project unmasks the creative process; poets craft new original works on the spot for the public in attendance. Poets meet and talk with people that approach their typewriter and use those conversations as the inspiration for new poems that are ultimately gifted to and performed for the audience member.
