DreamWorks Animation in Concert – Celebrating 20 Years at the Hollywood Bowl – Los Angeles concert report

The Hollywood Bowl will celebrate DreamWorks Animation’s 20th anniversary with DreamWorks Animation in Concert – Celebrating 20 Years, hosted by Jack Black and featuring music/scenes from DreamWorks Animation’s most beloved films including Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, and How To Train Your Dragon performed by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra under Principal Conductor Thomas Wilkins. The evening will highlight the work of award-winning composers Hans Zimmer, John Powell, Alan Silvestri, and Danny Elfman, and will also feature guest composer/conductors Harry Gregson-Williams and Alexandre Desplat. Singer Judith Hill will join the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra for “When You Believe,” by Stephen Schwartz, from The Prince of Egypt.

The two concerts will be held Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, 2014 at 8:00 PM and each concludes with fireworks display.

The salute to DreamWorks Animation’s great stories and beloved characters will take place July 18 and 19. The shows will include live performances of the memorable scores from the selected films, accompanied by visually stunning film clips on the Hollywood Bowl’s big screen with the evening culminating in a spectacular fireworks show.

“I cannot think of a more fitting place to celebrate our 20th Anniversary than the legendary Hollywood Bowl,” said DreamWorks Animation Chief Creative Officer Bill Damaschke. “Together with our partners at the LA Phil, we have put together a truly celebratory evening for families and fans of all ages that will not only bring the stunning music of our composers to life on stage, but will hopefully have everyone laughing out loud and maybe even singing along.”

DreamWorks Animation in Concert – Celebrating 20 Years continues the Hollywood Bowl’s tradition of partnering with neighboring film studios and organizations to produce unique events. In recent years, this has included a Paramount Pictures 100th anniversary show, an 85th anniversary concert for Warner Bros and a 75th anniversary concert for Twentieth Century Fox.

Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda)will be the host for both evenings. Black’s turn as Bernie earned him some of the greatest reviews of his career, with David Denby of The New Yorker calling his performance a “…fine, disciplined piece of acting” and Peter Travers calling his performance “award-caliber.” Up next, Black will co-star with Tim Robbins in the HBO comedy series The Brink, with Executive Producers Jerry Weintraub, Jay Roach and Roberto Benabib. Black is currently filming Sony Pictures’ Goosebumps, based on the popular horror children’s books written by R.L. Stine. In 2015, Black will reprise his role as “Po” for the third installment of DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda franchise. To date, Kung Fu Panda and Kung Fu Panda 2 have grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide. Black has previously starred in The Big Year, The Muppets, Gulliver’s Travels, Tropic Thunder, Nacho Libre, School of Rock,and King Kong.
