Bette Midler—aka The Divine Miss M—is set to star in the West Coast premiere I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers, opening at the Geffen Playhouse on December 3rd and running for a limited engagement until December 22, 2013.
Written by John Logan and directed by Joe Mantello, this one-woman show first played in New York, bringing American singer-songwriter, actress, comedian, film producer and entrepreneur Bette Midler back to the Broadway stage for the first time in 30 years.
Sue Mengers was the first ‘superagent’ at a time when women talent agents of any kind were almost unheard of. A refugee from Hitler’s Germany, she came from near poverty and worked her way through the entertainment industry relying on her pluck, charm, and her legendary wit. In that uniquely American way, she invented herself; and when the career she wanted didn’t exist, she invented that as well: “Superagent.” By the 1970’s, she represented almost every major star in Hollywood and went on to become the town’s most renowned hostess.
Via Vanity Fair:
A hilariously bawdy, no-bullshit blonde who crashed the industry men’s club, Mengers was a William Morris secretary from the Bronx whose moxie, canniness, and astringent wit took her to the top of the Hollywood power structure, making her nearly as famous as her clients, a list that included Ali MacGraw, Gene Hackman, Peter Bogdanovich, Burt Reynolds, and close friend Barbra Streisand.
